Bedwetting may be linked to respiratory problems, the researchers suggested. It could even be an explanation for incontinence in some adults, says the Australian team. Previous studies have shown that when children have adenoids or tonsils, bedwetting ceases. But researchers say the blocked airways can also cause problems. British experts believe that all children with incontinence problems at night should be examined to see if it can be caused by respiratory problems. Nearly half a million children in the UK are affected by bedwetting.Brace treatment Dr. Derek Mahoney, an orthodontist at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, Australia, said eight in 10 children referred to him from bed-wetting problems have a narrow palate. tongue is pushed back and can partially block the airway during sleep. Children can have a device similar to a corset, to widen the palate. In a previous Swedish study, seven of 10 children who had not responded to other treatments showed improvement after using the brace.Four bed-wetting stopped completely. Another British study showed nocturnal enuresis stopped in 10 of the 10 children who received reinforcements. Dr. Mahoney is about to begin a larger study of 100 children.
