New non-aspirin pain drug proves effective against recurrent prostate cancer

The results of a first can determine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, whether drugs of Cox-2 inhibitors, a new type of pain medication without aspirin widely prescribed for arthritis symptoms, may benefit men with recurrent prostate cancer. The new results show that inhibitors of COX-2 is anti-tumor effect on prostate cancer, the disease progression in men with PSA blood tests show the recurrence of cancer slowly, investigators said. The results were presented to sixth June at the American Society of Clinical Oncologys annual meeting.
There is currently no effective treatment options for the approximately 50,000 people each year develop early signs of recurrence of the disease - called biochemical relapse, a detectable PSA levelCheap furosemideincreased after surgery or radiotherapy for prostate cancer. For these otherwise healthy people, the first clinical sign of recurrence of the disease next year. If the points of PSA testing for the repetition, the good news is that there is a standby time of up to seven years. The bad news is that it has nothing to offer appropriate and effective at this early stage of recurrence, said Dr.S. Raj Pruthi, lead researcher studied. The use of chemotherapy in prostate cancer has been disappointing, in general, if seen in these patients in terms of efficacy and toxicity.
Pruthi, assistant professor of surgery, urology, Faculty of Medicine, also co-directs the Multidisciplinary Urologic Oncology Program of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. The results were based onCheap furosemide24 prostate cancer patients in biochemical relapse who were treated with a Cox-2 inhibitor and followed for more than a year. After three months, 22 of 24 patients (92 percent) showed a significant inhibitory effect on the levels of PSA, including 11 patients with PSA decreased or stabilized. For the 13 remaining patients, 11 had a dramatic slowing in their PSA doubling time, or the rate of increase in PSA, and two patients
