Online tool estimates opportunity for long-term survival of prostate cancer
A study just completed by researchers at the Josephine Ford Cancer has resulted in the survival model more complete long-term prostate cancer available to date. An interactive version of the survival model is available in prostatecalculator. Patients and physicians, the site can make an estimate of personal survival of 10 years for reasons of age visit, the race to get some clinical measures, and the type of treatment continues. After entering the data, a simple mouse click provides the prognosis.Dr. Ashutosh Tewari, with the Josephine Ford Cancer Center (Detroit, MI) worked with researchers in Cape RNA (Denver, CO) retrospectively identified a cohort of 1611 patients with clinically localized prostate cancer and 4538 age, race and co-morbidity (the with additional
diseases) control subjects. Based on demographic and clinical risk propensity scoring was used to develop estimates of the probability of survival for the patients and controls. published since the computer and the companion look-up tables in the April issue of the Journal of Urology, compared with men with similar characteristics, but do not have prostate cancer, provide users with a realistic estimate effects of prostate cancer on long-term survival.Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumor in men diagnosed with solid organ in the United States, with an estimated 189,000 new cases each year. Currently, African-American men have the highest incidence of prostate cancer in the world (137 per 100,000 per year), and 2.5 times more likely to die than whites. Although
the reason is unknown, some research suggests that black men are often diagnosed at a later stage of the disease. Mr. Tewari added, our research indicates that African-American men also tend to undergo less aggressive treatment than whites, and further studies by our group suggest that if they received the same treatment, their rate of cancer survival of prostate cancer would be much closer to those of whites. The study
